Description

Dr. Cora Sternberg is an internationally recognized leader in medical oncology and a world expert in genitourinary (GU) cancers and drug development. She is a key opinion leader across multiple GU malignancies and is widely known for her pivotal role in developing novel therapies and targeted agents for prostate, renal, and bladder cancers. Dr. Sternberg helped develop the original M‑VAC chemotherapy regimen, as well as the accelerated and high‑dose M‑VAC regimens for bladder and urothelial cancers, which remain gold‑standard treatments that have saved countless lives and reduced patient suffering. She has also served as principal investigator or key contributor to numerous practice‑changing prostate cancer studies, leading to FDA approvals of abiraterone acetate and enzalutamide. Her research published in the New England Journal of Medicine demonstrated significant improvements in metastasis‑free survival in men with high‑risk, non‑metastatic castration‑resistant prostate cancer (M0 CRPC), resulting in the approval of enzalutamide for this patient population. In renal cell carcinoma, Dr. Sternberg played a critical role in the development of pazopanib, serving as lead investigator of the pivotal phase 3 international trial that demonstrated its efficacy and safety and led to FDA approval. She has also contributed to the development of other anti‑angiogenic agents, including sunitinib, cabozantinib, tivozanib, and dovitinib. At Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYork‑Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Sternberg supports the continued growth of clinical and translational research in GU malignancies. As Clinical Director of the Englander Institute for Precision Medicine (EIPM), she leads efforts to integrate genomic sequencing and precision medicine across the healthcare system, including Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens. She works closely with Olivier Elemento, PhD, to advance precision oncology strategies aimed at improving cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. Dr. Sternberg previously served as Chief of Medical Oncology at San Camillo‑Forlanini Hospital in Rome and as Adjunct Professor of Oncology at La Sapienza University. She is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and completed her fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. She has authored approximately 400 peer‑reviewed publications, including over 100 first‑authored articles, co‑edited six textbooks, and written more than 80 book chapters. Dr. Sternberg has delivered roughly 750 invited lectures worldwide and serves or has served on the editorial boards of numerous leading oncology journals. She also holds or has held multiple senior editorial roles across major publications in oncology and urology. Dr. Sternberg has served extensively on international oncology committees, including multiple elected terms on the Board of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), and currently serves on the nominating committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
