Description

Shaheer Khan, DO, is an attending oncologist at the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Hospital at Long Island Medical Center and at Lenox Hill Hospital, and is an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Dr. Khan specializes in genitourinary cancers those affecting the kidney, bladder, prostate and testicles as well as cutaneous cancers including melanoma and other skin cancers and carcinomas. Dr. Khan first became interested in oncology during his first post-college job, working as a coordinator at a cancer hospital. I saw firsthand the need for treatments for people experiencing these serious issues. Witnessing the relationship between the patients and their doctors, and the innovations that were happening, sparked my desire to pursue this field. After getting his medical degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine, he completed his internal medicine residency at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where he also served as chief resident. After completing his fellowship in hematology and oncology at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, he remained there for two and a half years before moving to the Northwell Cancer Institute. Several things drew me to Northwell. First, their vision to build a world-class cancer center. Second, their commitment to improving every aspect of the patient journey. Third, their focus on building academic and research programs. It's an area I'm excited to help grow.Dr. Khan credits the people he sees everyday including his collaborative and talented team and the patients themselves with fueling a passion for his work. My relationship with my patients is the foundation for everything else. I really want them to feel comfortable, so I take the time needed to explain every aspect of their diagnosis and care. If I were in their shoes, that's what I would want.He also loves getting to know people and their families and learning about their diverse backgrounds. An amazing and unique part of medicine is that in addition to helping a patient navigate something very significant, you meet people from all walks of life and learn their stories, which is immensely rewarding. While some consider oncology a difficult career, Dr. Khan wishes they could spend a day in his shoes. I am grateful for the privilege of helping people and being part of a revolution in terms of advancements in cancer care and research. This is truly one of the best jobs in the world.
