As a leader and expert in the field, Dr. Mazzella holds various clinical positions, including, but not limited to, treating patients in his private practice, training professionals at two post-graduate training institutes, conducting research, and lecturing across the country. While his focus with his patients is psychodynamic in nature, his main goals are to build a trusting relationship and help each patient reduce the frequency and intensity of their emotional painful thoughts and suffering. He helps his patients overcome both acute and long-standing problems that may be more imbedded in their personality. My Story Embarking on my graduate studies at Fordham University’s Graduate School of Social Services set the stage for a transformative academic journey. During this period, I pursued a dual concentration in Research and Clinical Social Work, laying the foundation for a career that seamlessly blends analytical rigor with hands-on, empathetic approaches. This diverse education not only equipped me with a robust understanding of the field but also ignited a passion for making a tangible impact in the lives of individuals and communities. Subsequently, my educational odyssey continued as I delved into psychoanalysis at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR), seeking the highest level of intellectual enrichment. This immersive experience not only broadened my perspective but also provided a nuanced understanding of the human psyche, enriching my ability to navigate the complexities of practice. Armed with this comprehensive education, I pursued the highest level of academic achievement with a Ph.D., deepening my clinical, teaching, and research skills. Today, each chapter of my educational narrative converges to shape a holistic and impactful approach, resonating with a commitment to continual learning and compassionate practice. My Professional Experience Throughout my professional journey, spanning from 1997 to the present, I have served as a Private Practitioner in Manhattan, specializing in Psychoanalysis & Psychotherapy. In this role, I have honed my skills in providing comprehensive mental health services to individuals seeking a transformative therapeutic experience. Additionally, from 2013 to the present, I have assumed the role of Clinical Supervisor at both the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training & Research (IPTAR)and the Metropolitan Center for Mental Health (MCMH). This multifaceted position involves guiding and supervising clinicians, contributing to their professional growth within the realm of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. In the realm of education, I have been actively involved in teaching since 2007. My instructional roles have included guiding students through topics such as Working with the Borderline Patient at the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research, and at the Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. I have also shared my expertise as an Adjunct Professor at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services, covering diverse subjects like Generalist Social Work Practice, Human Behavior in the Social Environment, and Social Work Practice in Research. My commitment to fostering learning extends to various institutions, reflecting my dedication to shaping the next generation of mental health professionals.
