Dr. Nadia S. Afridi is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Canada, an associate fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Upon completing medical school, Dr. Afridi entered a highly competitive integrated plastic surgery residency program at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada. Five years of residency training culminated in a final year as Chief Resident. Dr. Afridi then completed one year of sub-specialty training in the U.S., focusing on reconstructive and aesthetic breast surgery as well as body contouring with internationally recognized surgeon and scholar, Dr. G. Patrick Maxwell.
Before entering practice, Dr. Afridi spent a year working for the non-profit organization Interplast. As the Jerome P. Webster fellow, she was primarily performing cleft lip and palate repair as well as burn reconstruction for children in the developing world. Please visit Dr. Afridi's Webster Fellow Bio at http://www.interplast.org.
As one of a limited number of plastic surgeons in New York City, Dr. Afridi is specifically interested in women's health issues as they relate to plastic surgery. She is keenly aware of the needs of young moms who want to experience the joys of family but keep their pre-baby physiques. Therefore, Dr. Afridi has established a particular interest, and is specializing, in post-maternity body reshaping.
Pregnancy and your Breasts - Post-maternity Breast Rejuvenation
While most moms agree that their breasts become full and attractive during their pregnancy, there is a dramatic variation in the degree the breasts change after having a baby. This tends to have little to do with whether a woman chooses to breastfeed.
For a very fortunate few women, the breasts return to their pre-baby shape and size soon after childbirth. The vast majority of women, however, find that their breasts become "empty-looking," and sometimes the nipples migrate so they're no longer on the fullest part of the breast. This is technically known as ptosis, or drooping. These sagging breasts are often in need of a breast lift or a combination of a breast lift and breast implants.
Pregnancy and your Belly - Post-maternity Belly Tightening
While the breasts undergo significant changes during pregnancy, no other part of the body undergoes as dramatic a process as the abdomen or tummy. Pregnancy stretches the abdominal wall, affecting both the skin and the "six-pack" rectus abdominis muscles underneath. This can result in a spectrum of concerns, including:
Losing the waistline
Loose, excess skin in the upper and lower abdomen
Stretch marks
Fat in the lower abdomen
In cases of Cesarean sections, a hard, tight scar above the pubic hairline over which the abdominal fat may hang.
Dr. Afridi can treat each of these problems using one or more of a variety of procedures. The precise treatment plan requires a customized surgical approach tailored to each specific patient. For example, women who have no stretch marks and a small amount of excess skin can benefit simply from liposuction, while women with significant skin excess with or without abdominal fat most likely need a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure.
Breast augmentation is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the U.S. and one of our most popular services in Dr. Afridi's Manhattan office. Breast augmentation can give women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer, better-proportioned look through the placement of saline or silicone implants in the breast.
Dr. Afridi's patients elect to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic reasons, including balancing breast size, compensating for reduced breast mass after pregnancy or surgery, and correcting a congenital breast defect. Under Dr. Afridi's expert care, patients enjoy great-looking, natural-feeling breasts that are one or more cup sizes larger after the operation.
Fully Customized Breast Enhancement
When you meet with Dr. Afridi for a breast augmentation consult in her New York City office, she will discuss the options and alternatives in great detail, providing you with all the information you need to make an informed decision that will satisfy your needs and expectations. Dr. Afridi offers all patients who qualify for breast augmentation the opportunity to "try on the look" during the initial consultation in order to help select the implant size that's right for them.
Complementary Procedures
Breast augmentation can achieve dramatic and beautiful results on its own as well as in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery or non-invasive procedures. Dr. Afridi sometimes recommends combining breast augmentation with other procedures such as a breast lift for more satisfying results.
Large breasts can cause pain, improper posture, rashes, breathing problems, skeletal deformities and low self-esteem. Many patients have difficulty exercising and losing weight because their large breasts are so cumbersome. Some women find that their breasts enlarged during pregnancy and have not returned to their original size afterwards.
Breast reduction surgery with Dr. Nadia Afridi in New York City is done to provide relief from these symptoms. Performed under general anesthesia, the two- to four-hour procedure removes fat and glandular tissue and tightens skin to produce smaller, lighter breasts that are in a healthier proportion to the rest of the body.
Depending on the patient’s degree and type of breast enlargement, Dr. Afridi offers her patients traditional as well as newer short-scar technique procedures for breast reduction.
Short-Scar Techniques
For many years, women who had breast reduction or breast lift surgery were left with prominent scars and the risk of the breasts drooping or flattening over time. The recently popularized short-scar techniques improve upon traditional breast reduction methods to avoid these problems.
The vertical short-scar technique involves making a lollipop-shaped incision in the breast. Tissue beneath the nipple and areole are left intact, allowing Dr. Afridi to consistently provide patients with attractively contoured breasts that stay high. The vertical scars are small and tend to heal well. Avoiding the horizontal scar underneath the breasts allows patient to freely wear deep plunging necklines exposing the cleavage without fear of revealing scars. Because there is no scar extending the side of the breasts, halter tops can also be worn without worry.
What happens during the breast reduction procedure?
During the traditional breast reduction procedure, Dr. Afridi makes an anchor-shaped incision from the new location of the nipple down to and around the crease beneath the breast. She removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin, relocates the nipple and areola, and reshapes the breast using skin from around the areola before closing the incisions with stitches. Liposuction may be recommended to remove excess fat from the armpit area. In fact, in some cases when only fat needs to be removed from the breasts, liposuction alone is used for breast reduction.
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is performed to return youthful shape and lift to breasts that have sagged as a result of weight loss, pregnancy, loss of the skin’s natural elasticity or simply the effects of aging and gravity. The procedure can also reduce areolar size (the dark skin surrounding the nipple), and it can be combined with breast augmentation for added volume and firmness. It is usually done under general anesthesia, and lasts from one to three hours.
Dr. Afridi has extensive training in mastopexy, and augmentation mastopexy, and is able to offer her patients short-scar techniques to return their breasts to their original youthful shape.

Where is a breast lift (mastopexy) performed? How long does it take?
Mastopexy is performed in Dr. Afridi's office-based facility. It is usually done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, and lasts from 1-½ to 3-½ hours.
Pre-operative Consultation & Procedures
A number of pre-operative steps are typically taken before a breast lift with Dr. Afridi. These may include a mammogram.
All patients will discuss their goals for breast lift surgery in-depth with Dr. Afridi before undergoing the procedure. During this discussion, Dr. Afridi talks with patients about the desired size and shape of the breast and placement of the nipple to help ensure that the patient's goals are realistic and that the procedure then achieves what the patient wishes.
The Breast Lift Procedure
During the standard breast lift procedure at Dr. Afridi's New York City office, an incision is made around the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple) and sometimes is continued vertically downward along the breast, depending on the extent of lift required. Excess breast skin and tissue is removed, and the nipple areola is relocated to an appropriate position on the breast mound. The incisions are closed with buried dissolving sutures.
Patients with small breasts and minimal sagging may be recommended for smaller-incision mastopexy. One such modified procedure is concentric ("doughnut”) mastopexy, in which two concentric circular incisions are made around the areola and a doughnut-shaped swathe of skin is removed.

Breast reconstruction restores a natural, symmetrical appearance to the bosom, maintains body proportion, allows clothes to fit better, and most important of all, boosts self-confidence for women who have lost one or both breasts to mastectomy, or who lack breasts or have asymmetrical breasts due to a congenital or developmental abnormality. Reconstructive surgeons strive to create a new breast and nipple that resemble the woman's natural breast as closely as possible in shape, size and position.
Dr. Afridi subspecialized for a year in breast reconstruction for cancer patients and finds this type of surgery to be exceptionally rewarding for both the patient and her.
Pregnancy can leave you with inverted or stretched nipples that make the breasts look aged or unattractive. Nipple reconstruction reshapes one or both nipples to achieve a pleasing and youthful appearance. Nipple reconstruction may be performed using one of several techniques, including tissue and cartilage flaps, skin grafts and tattooing. It is most often performed as a second- or third-stage procedure in breast reconstruction for women who have undergone mastectomy.

One of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures, liposuction sculpts the body by removing undesirable fat from areas such as the abdomen, waist, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, chin, cheeks, neck and upper arms that have not responded to diet and exercise.
Abdominoplasty, often called a "tummy tuck," is a very popular surgery in the U.S.A. Tummy tucks help to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles. Dr. Afridi has been performing abdominoplasties with excellent cosmetic results and high patient satisfaction for many years.
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
The best candidates for abdominoplasty are in good physical condition with pockets of fat or loose skin that haven’t responded well to diet and exercise. Dr. Afridi can also help older, slightly obese people whose skin has lost some of its elasticity.
Abdominoplasty can also be useful for women with stretched skin and muscles from pregnancy. The tummy can stretch and sag once more if women continue to bear children, so Dr. Afridi advises patients who plan to become pregnant to delay abdominoplasty.
She also encourages patients who intend to lose a lot of weight to wait before undergoing the procedure, since skin in the abdominal area typically loosens after substantial weight loss.
Customized Treatment for Optimal Cosmetic Results
Dr. Afridi takes the time during every pre-operative consultation in her Manhattan office to learn what her patients want to achieve from a tummy tuck both for their bodies and for their self-confidence. By listening to what patients have to say and closely examining them rather than performing a one-size-fits-all procedure on every person, she provides patients with completely customized treatment that takes into account their specific goals.
Partial abdominoplasty is similar to abdominoplasty except a shorter incision is made and the skin is only lifted to the navel, which does not have to be moved.
Also called belt lipectomy or torsoplasty, the circumferential body lift is performed to remove excess skin from the abdomen and torso. Body lifts tighten and tone the abdomen, back, buttocks, hips and thighs.
Candidates for body lifts typically suffer from loose (inelastic) skin on many or most areas of the body as a result of age, childbearing or significant weight loss due to diet, exercise or bariatric surgery. Because of this, the procedure is often combined with others such as breast lifts, arm lifts and liposuction to retain an attractive body proportion.
A high lateral tension abdominoplasty combines the effects of a tummy tuck and a lateral thigh lift without the need to undergo an extensive body lift. The resulting scar is a little longer and is located slightly higher up the sides of the abdomen than the scar created by a regular abdominoplasty.
A thigh lift is performed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper legs. Candidates typically suffer from loose, inelastic skin on the thighs after extreme weight loss due to childbirth, diet, exercise or bariatric surgery.
In a medial thigh lift (inner thigh lift), the surgical incision is made in the inner thigh along the line where the leg meets the groin. In a lateral thigh lift (outer thigh lift), the incision is made from the groin around the back of the body, so that the buttocks are lifted along with the thigh.
Blepharoplasty can rejuvenate puffy, sagging or tired-looking eyes by removing excess fat, skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. It may be performed for cosmetic reasons or to improve sight by lifting droopy eyelids out of the patient's field of vision. The procedure is usually performed in an office with local anesthesia in as little as 45 minutes. Blepharoplasty can be combined with browlifts or BOTOX® treatments to raise the eyebrows or reduce the appearance of wrinkles, crow's feet or dark circles under the eyes.
Browlifts can revitalize drooping or lined foreheads, helping you to look less angry, sad or tired. Using either traditional or minimally invasive (endoscopic) methods, the muscles above the eyes are altered to smooth lines and raise the eyebrows for a more youthful appearance. The procedure is often combined with other operations such as blepharoplasty or BOTOX® treatments to improve the look of the eyes and other areas of the face.
Chin liposuction, or neck lift, is performed to remove excess fat beneath the chin and tighten loose skin in the neck. A less invasive alternative to a facelift, the procedure can produce dramatic results in the patient whose chin and/or neck has sagged with age or after weight loss.
Restylane® is designed to smooth wrinkles, sculpt lips and shape facial contours. It is a clear, synthetic gel made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is found throughout your body. It carries little risk of allergic reaction. The most common areas for treatment are the glabellar lines (between the eyebrows) and the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of your mouth). With its unique ability to bind with water, Restylane remains in your skin for many months.
Juvéderm is an injectable gel that gently reverses many signs of aging in the face, including fine lines and wrinkles, crow's feet, thinning lips and loosening skin. It can also "plump up" the lips, sculpt the cheeks, and restore a youthful oval shape to the face. It is made with hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in the body that works with collagen and elastin to give volume and support to the skin. Because it is non-animal-based and highly biocompatible, no pre-treatment testing is needed. Juvéderm comes in three formulas optimized for the depth of the area being treated. Results last about 6-9 months and can be made to last even longer with a simple follow-up treatment a few weeks after the initial injection.
BOTOX® Cosmetic is commonly used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of facial wrinkles. It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to smooth crow's feet, frown and worry lines, and lines on the neck. Made from a purified protein, BOTOX® injections block nerve impulses, weakening muscles to relax wrinkles and give the face a rejuvenated look. BOTOX® may also be useful for excessive sweating. It can be combined with surgical procedures such as blepharoplasty and brow lifts for even more effective results.
Radiesse™ is a synthetic injectable filler that reduces wrinkles, creases and scars by augmenting the body’s natural collagen supply. Composed of microspheres in a biocompatible gel, Radiesse is made from the same minerals found in our bones, so it carries little risk of allergic reaction. Radiesse can be used on many areas of the body, including the lips, nasolabial folds, peri-oral lines, depressed scars and oral commissures.
Treatments typically take 15 minutes and require only local anesthetic. Side effects such as swelling or bruising are minimal and should fade within a few days. Results are visible immediately after the injection and can last for months or years. Radiesse treatments can be repeated as often as you wish.
Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin on the face to smooth texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. Peel formulas and strengths are tailored to each patient.
